| Had the first ever session at Saxon: Lilydale tonight. I have to say the place is pretty impressive. Four nets with enormous run ups. At least 30m from the end of the pitch. I'm told this will be shortened a bit to make way for a warm up area. All the nets are white, which makes it easier to see I'm told. In other words, the batsmen have one less excuse. It looks like two opposing lanes for the bowling machine. Definitely a well thought out use of the space available. The viewing area is half finished, but is a good size, and looks like a great vantage point. The run ups are covered by some nice springy rubberstuff. Think McDonalds playground style. I have some issues with shin splints, but no worries hitting the crease on that surface. Fantastic. But the bowlers will wear a hole in the crease real quick. That mght be an issue for management. The pitches sound funny, but the bounce is true and the whole area is extremely well lit. The lighting is a real feature. My only gripe is it's kind of hard to find. Through the back of the timber yard. But that's a once in a lifetime problem. Not sure what happens in April/May/June but if they could pull the nets out it could be a great indoor footy training venue of a bit of a change up. A massive area. Not sure of the actual dimentions, but I reckon around 50m x 15m in the main net area. Make no mistake. This is the best training facility I've seen for local cricket. Clubs should do what they can to get on. It's fantastic. Well done to Saxon and all those involved. |
